Marybeth spent over 90 minutes with this Veteran providing comfort and compassion all while ensuring safety measures were being addressed by the appropriate staff.
A 79-year-old Veteran who lives alone in a rural region contacted Marybeth on her work phone stating that they had been "fighting a deep depression for the past 2 weeks" and did "not know how to handle it". Marybeth asked if this Veteran was suicidal and the Veteran confirmed stating that they wanted to end the depression by suicide. Marybeth sprang into action and spent extended time assisting this Veteran to ensure their safety and well-being. The Veteran is well known to the primary care team, including Marybeth. She was able to speak to the Veteran about their beloved dog "Smooch" who is important to them as they have had her since she was a puppy. She maintained the conversation with the Veteran while she contacted the Primary Care Mental Health team, the local police department, and the Veterans Crisis line for additional support and assistance with this Veteran's needs. Marybeth spent over 90 minutes with this Veteran providing comfort and compassion all while ensuring safety measures were being addressed by the appropriate staff. The Veteran responded well and remains safe. The Veteran expressed gratitude for Marybeth during this challenging time and that she went above and beyond as a Nurse. She was able to connect to this Veteran on a personal level providing hope and encouragement.
