Maryjane O'Doherty, RN

I am commending Maryjane O'Doherty for the extraordinary compassion she demonstrated while caring for one of our long-term ICU patients. This patient had spent nearly a year in a hospital bed, enduring countless challenges throughout his hospitalization.

As his condition declined and he approached the end of his life, Maryjane took the time to learn about the things that brought him joy. Knowing one of his favorite meals came from a local restaurant, she arranged to get that meal for him. When the patient asked if something could also be ordered for his wife, Maryjane saw an opportunity to do something truly special. Rather than just ordering food for the patient, she decided to create a meaningful experience for them. Using her own time and resources, she purchased dinner for both the patient and his wife and transformed a small space in the ICU into their own personal date night. Maryjane gave him the chance to share one more special evening with the person he loved most.

Shortly after, the patient passed away. While we cannot change the outcome of every illness, Maryjane reminded us that nursing is about so much more than medications, procedures, and monitors. She recognized the humanity of her patient and understood that creating moments of dignity, love, and connection can be just as important as any clinical intervention. The gift she gave this patient and his wife cannot be measured. In one of the most difficult chapters of their lives, she helped create a memory that will be cherished forever. Maryjane embodies the very essence of compassionate nursing care.
