This patient had an unexpected return to the hospital following a coronary artery bypass graft with aortic valve replacement. He required several surgeries to repair a sternal dehiscence and required a couple of chest tubes. He eventually was transferred to PCU from the ICU. He was very depressed being in the hospital and mostly down because he was away from his pet dog whom he spoke of often. His daughter expressed seeing her dad depressed all the time and thought it would be great if his pet dog could come and visit. Kelsey and her nurse Intern, Mason, coordinated with the family and the MD to have the patient reunite with his beloved pet. Kelsey and Mason attended to the patient's medical needs to safely transport him outside to visit with his dog. Following his visit with his dog, his mood changed for the good, he was more inclined to participate in his physical therapy. When the patient was discharged from PCU, upon being wheeled out he stopped by my office and wanted to thank everyone. As he was wheeled out he shouted "THANK YOU, EVERYONE!" Because of Kelsey and Mason's dedication to excellence, the patient's condition improved.
