Unfortunately, there were a lot of ups and downs with my dad and ultimately he didn't make it, but the compassion and care that Matt and that whole unit showed to myself and my family was truly incredible.
My father was a patient at Roger Williams Hospital for about a month and while there, there were numerous wonderful medical staff who cared for him; there was one nurse who was exceptional. His name is Matt Greer and Matt works in the Intensive Care Unit.

Whenever I came there to visit my dad and Matt was there he would come in and was always pleasant. He would talk me through what they were doing, give me updates, and always tell me in a way that I actually understood. One night when there was a little downtime he shaved my dad's face, which might not seem like much, but my dad hated facial hair and wouldn't have been happy to see the scruff.

There was one particular night when I was there alone and my dad's ventilator started beeping and lighting up, his nurse came in and called respiratory and numerous people came in, and to be honest, I freaked out and was terrified. I was outside of the room just watching as more people went in my dad's room, Matt: came over to me (he wasn't even assigned to my dad that night) and told me what was happening, what they were doing, and what they were going to do. He calmed me down and made me feel better about what I was seeing. He was always compassionate and honest and said things in a way that we understood, he answered follow-up questions before we even asked them.

When I think of what a nurse should be, he is exactly it. Unfortunately, there were a lot of ups and downs with my dad and ultimately he didn't make it, but the compassion and care that Matt and that whole unit showed to myself and my family was truly incredible. I can at least live my life knowing that they did everything they could for him and he was in the best care.
