I was admitted to your facility for surgery. I had the wonderful opportunity to have this nurse as my check-in nurse. I would like to give you a little back story about myself here. Over my 70 years of life, I have had numerous bad experiences with nurses or others giving me IVs or drawing blood. I have been known to have major anxiety attacks during these procedures. I have also been told I have small veins and they roll. This was explained to this nurse as he was prepping me for surgery. He was so kind and gracious in explaining every step of what was happening at the time to help with my comfort. He also explained that I had been lied to over the years, which I was still kind of leery about. He indicated that I have great veins and that he would explain what he would be doing and why to dispel my anxiety and concerns. He provided me with comfort and care that was just amazing. He explained that he would provide me with a numbing agent in the vein and then place the IV. I was totally amazed that before I knew, my IV was placed without pain or any anxiety. I know this might sound trivial or that this was his job, but when a person can go into full-blown anxiety over an IV, well, he rates outstanding in my book. He listened; he cared and his compassion for my needs was exemplary.
