During the more painful and confusing episodes, I went through whether it was a quick joke, a comforting comment, or a photo of Alice, his cat. Matt’s compassion was the most reassuring part of my stay. Through conversation about psychology degrees, one thing was made abundantly clear to me; Matt is someone who just wants to help people. This can be said about all nurses, but the humanistic way he approached the topic of caring for people, laid his heart on his sleeve. Whether he noticed it or not, he made it clear that caring for others was at the core of his being. Even when I was in excruciating pain or going on drug-induced tangents which made little to no sense, he always made me feel comfortable, listened to, and soothed.
