It doesn't seem possible that I could ever thank Matt enough for taking such extraordinary care of me during my hospitalization. I had only ever been to the hospital before this event for happy moments, to have each of my three children. I had never been in an ambulance, never had a central line, never had been in the ICU, never had blood products, or even ever had been as vulnerable as I was during my stay at U of L. On the day of my first surgery, Matt was there to pick me up from the Cath lab with his smiling face. From this point forward, he took care of me for four more days while I was in the ICU. I was not the typical ICU patient that they were accustomed too. I handled my situation with laughter and Matt was the perfect person to laugh with. He fought for me as an advocate when the doctors didn't agree with my care, he noticed when I was stressed or upset and asked what was wrong and offered support, he provided the care that I needed when I was vulnerable and unable to care for myself, he was there at my most embarrassing moments and the moment where I finally left the ICU, and most importantly, he was there to laugh with me and hold a conversation when I needed distraction from the scariest thing I had ever been through. So, how do you say thank you to someone so compassionate, professional, skilled, and extraordinary? As a nurse myself, one of the biggest honors is receiving The DAISY Award. And in my opinion, Matt is a true DAISY Nurse.
