I am an 80-year-old woman and was scheduled for a laparoscopic gallbladder removal on my 80th birthday. Needless to say, I was not in the best frame of mind. I was very scared. Matthew Crawford pulled a chair over to the bed and sat down and said, "What's going on?" He calmly talked to me for at least 15 minutes. He asked me questions, trying to address my fears. We talked about mundane things, but we "talked," and Matt managed to quiet my overactive mind. I asked if I would see him after surgery; he said no, as pre-op was his assigned area. I felt he cared about me, and I appreciated that. Thank you.
