When my 27-year-old brother was admitted to the ICU after a traumatic brain injury from a snowboarding accident, our family entered the most difficult 12 days of our lives. We were terrified, exhausted, and desperately hoping for signs that he would recover. Throughout those long days (and especially the even longer nights), Matt became a source of comfort, patience, and hope for all of us. My brother experienced significant sundowning during his ICU stay. Instead of simply trying to keep him confined, Matt met him where he was. He patiently redirected him, walked the halls with him, and, when it was safe, even allowed him brief visits to the family waiting room so he could see us. Rather than seeing a difficult patient, Matt saw a young man desperate to feel like himself again. Those moments meant more to our family than I can put into words. They gave my brother comfort and gave us precious moments together during an incredibly uncertain time.

What impressed me most was the way Matt connected with my brother. Because of his brain injury, my brother struggled to understand what was happening and had difficulty communicating due to his aphasia. Yet Matt had such a calm, reassuring presence that my brother trusted him completely. He listened to Matt when he wouldn't always listen to others. It was remarkable to watch someone show such patience, kindness, and compassion while caring for a patient who was scared, confused, struggling to communicate, and even trying to call Ubers to take himself home.

Matt also cared for our entire family. We are a large Italian family, which meant there were always questions, concerns, emotions running high, and at times - a little too much commotion. No matter how many times we asked the same questions, Matt never made us feel like a burden. He explained everything clearly, calmly, and in a way we could understand. He helped us feel included in my brother's care and gave us confidence that he was exactly where he needed to be.

One evening, Matt shared that he had recently experienced a profound personal loss involving a loved one. Learning that only deepened my appreciation for the compassion he showed my brother and our family every single night. I told him that his story was a testament to his character and the kind of person he is - that despite experiencing unimaginable grief, he still showed up every night and gave his patients and their families the same compassion, empathy, and strength that he would have wanted for his own family. It reaffirmed what we witnessed every night: Matt has an extraordinary gift for caring for others.

I have never forgotten that conversation. Matt embodies everything the DAISY Award represents. His clinical skill and bedside manner are exceptional, but his humanity sets him apart. During the darkest chapter of our lives, he gave my brother dignity, comfort, and extraordinary care while also supporting an anxious family who simply wanted their son and brother to come home. Today, my brother continues to recover, and I truly believe nurses like Matt helped make that possible. Our family will never forget his kindness, his patience, or the compassion he showed us while carrying his own grief. He made an immeasurable difference in our lives, and he deserves this recognition.

As my brother's aphasia continues to improve, one of the things he looks forward to most is returning to the AICU to personally thank Matt and every nurse who helped him during those twelve unforgettable days. As his older sister, I couldn't be prouder. My brother, who once couldn't communicate and was trying to order an Uber home from the ICU, has recovered enough that one of his greatest goals is to thank the people who helped him through the darkest days of his life. While I am forever grateful to the entire AICU, neurosurgery, and trauma teams, Matt's compassion, patience, and humanity left a lasting impression on our family and are a large part of why we will never forget our time there.
