Matt went far beyond his role as a CRNA. He didn’t just administer anesthesia — he carried us emotionally through one of the most terrifying experiences of our lives.
During the scariest hours of our lives, Matt was the steady presence who kept us grounded and reassured. He was our certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) for both an external cephalic version (ECV) and the subsequent c‑section, and from beginning to end, his care was extraordinary.
When it was difficult to place the IV, Matt stepped in with remarkable kindness and gentleness, transforming a dreaded and stressful moment into one of calm. During the ECV, he took the time to listen to her past fears and proactively promised to manage her nausea. What mattered most was how intentionally he communicated — giving specific, real-time explanations of what was happening rather than a generic “everything is fine.” He paired those details with constant reassurance, praising her and reminding her how well she was doing. When her blood pressure dropped, Matt responded immediately and decisively, keeping her safe and steady.
When the ECV was unsuccessful, and the decision was made to proceed with a C‑section, the room filled with fear, prayer, and tears. In that moment, Matt gently reassured me that I could step out to call her mom. That simple encouragement gave us connection and comfort when everything felt overwhelming.
Once surgery began, Matt became our anchor. He prepared her for each sensation, checked continuously to ensure she was comfortable and pain-free, and even peeked over the curtain to keep us informed, including the unforgettable moment when he told us our baby was about to be born. His words allowed us to breathe, stay present, and keep panic at bay.
