My 7-year-old son was admitted to Scotland Memorial Hospital and stayed for 2 days for IV antibiotics after a beach vacation, turn swimmers' ear, then turn terrible ear infection. Both nights he stayed Matthew was my son's nurse. The care he gave my son was beyond what the standard of care called for. He became a person my little person trusted. Matthew took the time out of his busy position of also being Charge Nurse to play games with my son, to talk baseball with my son and to make him laugh.
On our 2nd night, my son became very emotional when he realized he was not going to go home again. Matthew took the time to help comfort him. When I was concerned because my son had not eaten, drank or urinated all day, Matthew helped me go through different things we could do and try. He talked with my son. He made a point to check my son's output all night long and stayed to talk with the doctor the next morning about all of this.
These things may seem like things all nurses should be doing and yes, they do. I know this because I am also a Nurse at this hospital. I am also a Pediatric Nurse at this hospital. I know the standard of care and I also know in my heart, Matthew rose above and beyond those standards. He and my son formed a bond and you do not find that every day or every visit. But, working at this hospital, I also know that Matthew did not do this just for us; I know him- he does this for every one of his patients.
Matthew consistently gives excellent care to all patients, regardless if they are his patient or if he helps them when he is their Charge Nurse on the unit. But more so, as a Pediatric Nurse, I knew how to care for my child as a patient. But I did not have to. I was able to be his Mom when it mattered most. I was able to just love him and be with him. Being able to sit back and lift the layer of stress off me, knowing that he had someone that was looking out for him, being his eyes and ears-- that is something that is priceless to me. This hospital is extremely fortunate to have a nurse like Matthew and the patients he cares for are far more fortunate!
