One of our patients was admitted with a catastrophic diagnosis of metastatic cancer and was scared, anxious, and lonely until he met Maura. Maura had a calming effect on the patient. She would spend hours a shift listening to his concerns and providing him education on his disease, his treatment plan, and what to expect after surgery. Maura had the patience to explain things to him multiple times with a smile on her face. The patient said that because of Maura he no longer felt despair regarding his diagnosis.
