Maureen Canavan, MSn, RN-BC
We, a collective group of Nurse Leaders and Nurses, are honored to nominate Maureen for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award in recognition of her extraordinary leadership, unwavering dedication to nursing excellence, and profound impact on both staff and patient care, as she has devoted her professional nursing practice for more than four decades.
She stands out as a special nurse leader for several reasons. First, Maureen has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to advancing professional nursing practice and supporting her colleagues. As a long-standing, pivotal member of the Rockin’ 4 Research Committee, she has championed evidence-based practice and fostered a culture of inquiry and innovation. Her passion for nursing excellence extends to her years as the manager sponsor of Shared Governance, where she empowered frontline nurses to have a voice in decision-making and professional practice, strengthening both engagement and accountability across the organization.
Maureen is also a dedicated mentor and leader among leaders. She has guided and supported numerous nurse managers throughout her career, willingly sharing her expertise and fostering their growth and success. Her willingness to step in during times of need—serving as interim manager across multiple units—speaks volumes about her reliability, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to ensuring stability and continuity in patient care environments.
Her leadership was especially impactful when she assumed responsibility for an additional unit and played a key role in its transformation into a brand-new unit. Through her vision, collaboration, and perseverance, she helped shape a successful transition that benefited both staff and patients alike.
What truly sets Maureen apart is the way she makes meaningful and personal connections with each of her teammates. She has built an incredible team. These relationships are how trust is built. Her teammate engagement scores are strong, and her nursing outcomes are strong.
When I am rounding on her unit, the nurses are kind and respectful to each other, sharing in the team’s successes. They have a whiteboard where staff write nice comments to each other, which shows the healthy work environment she fosters. They even teach each other key words in another person’s language – I have learned to say hello, goodbye, thank you - in Spanish and Arabic. And even a few words that aren’t appropriate for this nomination – LOL.
That last line was to honor Maureen’s quiet sense of humor. She is so funny. She makes me laugh and brightens my day. When I round with her – I hear her laughing with her patients. She has built an incredible team – her successor is lucky.
She is an incredible leader who has found the right balance between management and leadership as she holds someone accountable while still inspiring them to provide excellent nursing care to those entrusted to us. She is absolutely adored and respected by her staff on 4 West and is widely considered the heart of the unit.
Her presence fosters a supportive, positive, and inclusive environment where nurses feel valued, heard, and inspired to do their best work every day. She leads with compassion, authenticity, and a genuine care for the well-being of those around her, and she takes care of herself.
Maureen embodies the spirit of the DAISY Nurse Leader Award through her servant leadership, dedication to professional development, and enduring impact on the culture of nursing. She is not only a remarkable leader but also a source of strength and inspiration for all who have the privilege of working with her.
