I am a first-time mom, I was being induced and had been in labor all day. Maureen had just started her shift and immediately delivered the mom next door to me. When she was done, she came into my room and realized it was time for me to deliver my baby. She talked to me and my boyfriend, we got to know her life and she got to know ours, she calmed us down when my blood pressure was uncontrollable, and we were just nervous about what was coming. She convinced my boyfriend to cut the cord which he was not planning to do. She held my hand, she rubbed my back, she encouraged me, she gave me relief. She made sure I had the best of care. We pushed together for over 30 minutes before she brought the doctor in. Once baby was born, she was ecstatic for us. She told me how well I did, how well we did. That she was beautiful. She knew I had not eaten and tracked down a sandwich wrap at 12 in the morning. She helped me shower, she didn't rush me and made me feel beyond comfortable in such a vulnerable state. She prepared everything, helped me get cleaned up and dressed. She helped us move our bags and repack them and get them together. She told us what we needed at the time for the baby.
I will never forget that night and what Maureen did for me and my family. How much of an impact she made on us. I am beyond thankful for her, that she was my nurse, that she worked that night. She was even going to transfer to the Mother-Baby side of the unit to stay with both of the moms she delivered, but two hours in she was called back to L&D to help another mom, and I hope that mom realized how lucky she was to have Maureen as her nurse, even just until the end of her shift. I just want to thank her for everything she did for us. She is the definition of an Extraordinary Nurse and is a true DAISY Nurse. Sentara Obici is so lucky to have a nurse like her working for them, she is an asset to the Labor and Delivery Unit.
