Maureen's passion for the nursing profession truly inspires all others around her, as she always first considers the needs of her colleagues and staff in how she conducts her professional life.
Dr. Maureen A. Schneider serves as a true NorthStar, a role model, and an advocate for nursing practice and for the advancement of nursing as a profession. It is for these attributes and so many more, that Dr. Schneider is so deserving of The DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award. It is our honor and privilege to acknowledge Maureen's accomplishments; therefore, the nursing, management, and administrative staff of Chilton Medical Center unanimously endorse Dr. Schneider for this prestigious recognition of her legacy in nursing and in healthcare.
Early in her career, as the Director of Nursing at Cornell University in the 1980s, Maureen was the first to organize and then lead as Chair, the inaugural Nurse Practice Council in a large, academic medical center. Maureen restructured hospital quality processes, established a nurse residency program, and redesigned models of care in both ambulatory and inpatient settings. She continued her strong nursing advocacy in the 1990s as a Corporate System Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive in a large healthcare system. In all her senior executive roles, from large academic centers to community hospitals, Maureen has created system-wide nursing committees, advocated for top-of-license nursing and advanced practice, standardized nursing practice standards, initiated electronic documentation processes, and established quality of care and education programs. A visionary, Maureen was one of the first in the country to develop nursing research initiatives at her organization that focused upon nursing scholarship and partnered with national research institutions in a variety of projects. In the early 21st century, Maureen was charged with leading a hospital that had just experienced the effects of a difficult and disruptive bargaining unit strike. True to her values, Maureen immediately established a nursing presence on every committee and advisory team. As a result, Maureen was able to enhance frontline clinical staff engagement throughout the entire organization, achieve across-the-board top box quality scores, and was awarded recognition by the Joint Commission. In every scenario, Maureen has consistently overcome barriers, proving that strong nursing skills, resilience, courage, and wise leadership can leverage even the most daunting situation into a successful one. For example, Maureen has implemented multidisciplinary teams to support transformation initiatives, maximized efficiencies in patient care unit and role redesign, and has been the architect of numerous quality initiatives, inclusive of patient, as well as staff satisfaction programs that have led to increases in recruitment and retention successes.
In addition to Dr. Schneider's administrative roles and functions, she is also a sought-after national consultant and adjunct professor in RN - BSN, DNP/Ph.D./ and MBA programs as well as a mentor in the Mentor Program for the American College of Healthcare Executives and is on the board of several healthcare organizations.
In every example, Maureen's passion for the nursing profession truly inspires all others around her, as she always first considers the needs of her colleagues and staff in how she conducts her professional life. Clearly, Maureen's most remarkable talent is that she innately determines shared strategic direction, and then, in her quiet and steady manner, takes the time necessary to coach all members of the team to achieve and then sustain their own professional and organizational successes.
It is certainly a mark of distinction that Maureen has led three very different organizations to achieve the ANCC Magnet® Recognition Award, continually advocating for the elements of professional performance and engaging crucial administrative support that are the linchpins to a strong nursing infrastructure. In this way, Maureen's team always exceeds the most current evidence-based standards of nursing excellence. As a result, Maureen is never satisfied with the status quo; she vigorously seeks opportunities to develop the clinical skills of the frontline nurses and empowers all levels of the nursing team she leads, to own their practice through a robust shared governance environment. Maureen always insists on reviewing the extant literature and regularly reaches out to her vast network of national nursing, hospital industry, and professional colleagues who are experts in a particular clinical or administrative practice specialty. In turn, Maureen is recognized as being in the company of outstanding leaders, and in her work at the state and regional levels, consistently empowers others to accomplish stellar outcomes.
In summary, Dr. Maureen Schneider has received numerous local, regional, and national accolades for her many contributions in nursing, healthcare, and in-patient care, which have resulted in an enormous legacy of sustainability. We who are so fortunate to be Maureen's professional colleagues at Chilton Medical Center are indeed proud that the following can be said about her: People may not remember exactly what you did, or what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel (Carl W. Buehler).
On behalf of the entire Chilton Medical Center team. It is with pleasure we acknowledge Dr. Maureen A. Schneider's transformational contributions to healthcare with The DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award.
