I would like to nominate Mauricio for the DAISY Award because, during my stay on the KMT ward at the University Hospital of Bonn, he treated me in a way that deeply moved me.

It’s really hard for me to single out one person from the entire team, because all the nurses on the ward do an outstanding job day after day. Every single person contributes to making patients feel safe, respected, and well cared for. Nevertheless, Mauricio has come to hold a special place in my heart. He was the first nurse I consciously interacted with, and that first impression had a profound impact on my entire stay.

His calm, warm manner, his attentiveness, and his genuine empathy immediately made me feel seen as a person and not just as a patient. He listened without pressuring me, was present without being intrusive, and, through his demeanor, showed me just how much humanity is possible in everyday nursing care.

My condition wasn’t medically critical (in other words, it wasn’t a matter of life and death at that moment), but that’s precisely why his approach made all the difference to me. He conveyed to me that every person matters—regardless of how serious or minor their medical condition is.

One moment in particular moved me deeply the day before I was discharged: At the end of his shift, he made a point of coming to see me one last time, just to say goodbye in person. It was a small gesture, but it had a profound impact. It showed respect, genuine compassion, and a warmth that can’t simply be learned. I especially appreciated the personal conversations we had while he was drawing blood or, for example, changing my central venous catheter dressing. Unfortunately, I don’t know his last name, but I really hope this description conveys just how much his behavior meant to me.

To me, Mauricio embodies what nursing is all about in the best sense of the word: professionalism, empathy, and a humanity that makes all the difference. That’s exactly why I’m wholeheartedly nominating him for the DAISY Award.

Thank you, Mauricio, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
