Maxwell then proceeded to sit at the patient's bedside and hold his hand over a period of a couple hours, providing physical, emotional, and spiritual support to the patient as he peacefully died.
Maxwell was the nurse assigned to a patient in the Medical Intensive Care Unit who did not have any family or friends supporting him over the course of his hospitalization. The patient had previously been intubated, and when he was extubated, he communicated that he did not want to be reintubated or resuscitated. Maxwell observed that the patient, who was conversant earlier in the day, had become withdrawn and was agonal breathing. Maxwell took the initiative to have the medical team transition the patient to comfort care, to best support the patient's wishes, and the patient's comfort and peace as he neared death. Maxwell contacted the spiritual care team to provide spiritual support to the patient. Maxwell then proceeded to sit at the patient's bedside and hold his hand over a period of a couple hours, providing physical, emotional, and spiritual support to the patient as he peacefully died. Maxwell made a meaningful difference for a patient who did not have the support of family and friends as he died. Maxwell was a friend to a patient who needed companionship in his transition from this life into the next and is deserving of recognition for his compassionate care for the patient.
