Maycee assured me I was safe, and she was right there to catch me should I fall. When I sat up at the side of the bed to then stand, I realized I not only needed nursing care but human compassion and asked I could hug her.
Following a trip to the ER via ambulance, I was taken for immediate emergency surgery. I was absolutely terrified and felt vulnerable, afraid, and confused. I woke up feeling surprised to have made it through surgery and with all the same feelings of vulnerability and confusion. I was extremely emotional and while my family was present, following my surgery they had left to give me the opportunity for rest and recovery. I felt alone and still afraid. Maycee was my post-op nurse, and through the next several hours, she would remove those fears, carefully chipping away at them little by little with each and every interaction. I was weak and needed to get up and out of bed to start restoring my body strength. This time came at a moment when I still felt paralyzed by fear and trauma. Maycee assured me I was safe, and she was right there to catch me should I fall. When I sat up at the side of the bed to then stand, I realized I not only needed nursing care but human compassion and asked I could hug her. My request was met with a warm, welcoming response, "Of course," I could hug her. As the hours continued on, I noticed things she did that gave me more comfort. She never left the room without first ensuring my comfort and safety. She made sure my covers and pillows were my preference, confirmed my ice chips were in reach, as well as my phone and call light, I later learned this is not something all or even most nurses do. She rubbed my legs before applying the pressure pumps. She braided my hair back when it was uncomfortably in my face. I thanked her many times, and when I finally asked her how it was, she was able to consider all the thoughtful ways she cares for her patients because it is so impressive. She humbly answered, "I simply do what I would want someone to do for me."
