I was admitted to the Cape Coral Campus with a severely herniated disc that needed surgery to correct. A few days after surgery, Mayelin became my night nurse. My post-op nerve pain was worse between 11 pm and 6 am. Mayelin monitored my pain meds and pain level to ensure they delivered the pain meds when they were allowed, rather than making me ask for them when the pain became unbearable.

On one night my pain was excruciating despite using all of the pain mends prescribed. I felt like I was having severe muscle spasms in my legs. I was crying uncontrollably. Mayelin came up with the idea to dampen towels, heat them, and apply them to the back of my legs. After about 20 minutes, the pain became bearable. During the first application, Mayelin held my hand and softly encouraged me that the pain would go away. This helped calm me. I have never had a nurse go so far out of their way to not only my physical needs but to my mental and emotional health as well. Mayelin truly demonstrates the value of "caring people, caring for people".
