She made sure to use bright colors to match the supplies in real life, including a red cap and blue stopcock. She also laminated the instructions so they were protected from all weather conditions.
The doctor pulled me aside to make sure I knew what an amazing nurse I had on my team. He had big praise for this nurse going above and beyond for one of our patients. The doctor informed me that McClain had handwritten discharge instructions for a patient and then laminated them to keep them clean and dry. These instructions include pictures and written instructions. She used simple images such as big green checks and red x's to make sure the patient would be able to follow them. Caring for a cholecystostomy tube in a permanent living situation is hard enough, but taking care of the cholecystostomy tube when unhoused brings more challenges. She made sure to use bright colors to match the supplies in real life, including a red cap and blue stopcock. She also laminated the instructions so they were protected from all weather conditions. McClain went to our care closet and made sure to find a waterproof bag, clean underwear, clean clothes, shoes, and medical supplies. Many nurses before McClain had tried to go over discharge teaching with this patient and would become paralyzed in fear from messing up or forgetting a step. This patient was terrified of hurting himself or getting an infection and literally could not go further with discharge teaching. McClain was able to relieve his fears and complete the discharge teaching so he could be discharged from the hospital.
