She recognized the importance of meeting patients where they are, with empathy and understanding.
McKenna has consistently shown a heart for others that goes far beyond academic excellence. In our Spirituality & Diversity course, students explore how biblical concepts like humility and justice can shape their nursing practice. These values align beautifully with the DAISY Award’s mission—to honor students who never lose sight of the humanity in every patient they care for. McKenna embodies these ideals in every setting, whether in the classroom, the clinic, or among her peers.
One powerful example of her compassionate spirit was during her service-learning project, where she volunteered as a patient escort and support at a surgical office. In reflecting on this experience, McKenna shared how patients often face deep fear and anxiety in clinical settings—feelings that may be invisible to the healthcare team but are very real to the patient. She recognized the importance of meeting patients where they are, with empathy and understanding. McKenna has expressed this same perspective in her reflections, simulation experiences, and everyday interactions.
