January 2025 Honoree
McKenzie Luknis, RN
This patient was at home with hospice care for metastatic cancer, but the family revoked hospice and the patient was admitted. She ended up requiring ICU care. Eventually, they changed the patient to a DNR CCA and then a limited code. On Thursday, they were planning to return to hospice care after a family member from Michigan arrived. In the morning, the patient took a turn for the worst. This nurse called the family, but they said they couldn’t bear to come in and see her pass. She then went into the room, held the patient’s hand, comforted her, and cried as she passed away. She did not want her to die alone. There were other nurses at the bedside comforting as well.
Thank you, McKenzie, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
