It is not always smiling babies and cute children. There are times in a Pediatric Nurse's career that make you take a step back, take a deep breath and try to hold back the tears. It all started the day we got a notification that we (C3M) would be getting a ten-year-old assault victim transferred in. Little did we know that this strong little boy would affect us all the way he did. I assigned this patient to Meagin. We discussed his injuries and what had happened to him. The boy's sibling and cousin were also killed in this attack.
Once I informed Meagin she would be getting this child, she looked at me and told me that she didn't know if she would be able to do this. We then sat back and waited for this child to arrive on the floor. Upon arrival to the floor, our forensic physician arrived and needed to examine him. I accompanied Meagin along with Child Life to the patient's room. This child was amazing. We, more so I, was the upset one. Meagin sat with the child and listened to him tell of the horror that he had been through. I was supposed to be supporting Meagin through this, but I could not hold it together and had to step out. She talked to him and told him how brave he was and that we were all there to help him. He was the sweetest most polite child. We were there to help him, but he ministered to us. The father and several other family members arrived. Because of the situation, the father and family had to speak with investigators outside of the room. Meagin made sure the child was not left alone at any point. She arranged for him to get a game system to play. I fully believe she would have given him anything he asked for. She also later went to Chick-fill-a and purchased sandwiches for the patient and family and made sure that they ate dinner. After her shift and the next day, she continued to call and check on the child. She was a patient and family advocate and continues to be in her daily work. She put the patient and family at the center of her care. She is a leader on her the unit as a charge nurse and a preceptor. She exemplifies every attribute of a DAISY Nurse and we are very privileged to have her as a nurse in the Children's Hospital on C3M and at Navicent Health.
