Regularly, our staff encounters many patients. Some leave you with warm memories, and some may leave you tired, exhausted, and burned out. One difficult patient scenario lasted much longer than anticipated. The MCU (Medical Care Unit) staff banded together to meet this patient’s needs and help one another creatively. The team spoke up when they needed breaks, and they took turns caring for the patient, all while providing excellent care. We interact with patients on what could be their worst days, and some patients' behavior can be inappropriate and unnecessary. When these challenging patients are in our care for more than 100 days, you can imagine all the stress the unit endured. I am so proud of how MCU staff unified and took the absolute best care of this patient. Describing some of the behaviors is relevant to this nomination: throwing food, cursing, vulgar language, yelling, belittling, and uncompromising, to name a few. Although this patient was bedridden and hard to satisfy, they provided excellent care that resulted in the patient's health restoring to baseline and providing a safe discharge.
Thank you for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
