In all of the chaos of an unprecedented time, this team kept the patient central in all they did. They were fierce advocates for what was right for patients.
I chose to nominate the entire Medicine Unit Staff on 6-3400 because of the infallible commitment to the well-being of our patients during the pandemic. This team became a designated COVID unit in March 2020; they have transitioned 4 times in patient population to support our patients and our community. In all of the chaos of an unprecedented time, this team kept the patient central in all they did. They were fierce advocates for what was right for patients. They were creative in how to cohort all the COVID patients on one unit. They utilized the iPads to keep these patients connected to their loved ones during heavily restricted visitation. They ensured safety through collaboration with the Providers and Nursing, making rooms conducive to acute care of the population, which can be very unpredictable in their disease progression. With ease, they worked to make changes weekly, daily, even hourly. They adapted so quickly to the ever-changing environment, always ensuring that their role with patient care was absolutely clear. This truly was a case of it takes a "village" to care for our patients. The teamwork, collaboration, compassion, and caring have put me in awe. These are amazing nurses and staff who have, for the last 6 months, remained committed to providing exceptional care to our community, putting themselves at risk each day, but "showing up" and giving it their very best every day. Their strength, resilience, and determination to provide "medicine of the highest order" in the midst of the pandemic have been truly heroic! These are the superheroes who embody the strength and compassion that The DAISY Award stands for.
