Megan and Chinal went far beyond their day-to-day patient care responsibilities to provide compassionate, patient-centered care during a very difficult situation. We recently cared for a patient being treated for endocarditis. While hospitalized, the patient’s wife went home to rest but tragically passed away unexpectedly. The patient needed to leave the hospital to identify his wife’s body, a heartbreaking and urgent need. Megan and Chinal worked hard and collaborated across disciplines to make this possible. They transitioned the patient’s anticoagulation therapy from heparin drip to Lovenox, coordinated with the care team to ensure safety, and arranged for the patient’s bed to remain available upon his return. Their efforts allowed the patient to leave the hospital safely, fulfill this deeply personal responsibility, and resume his treatment without interruption. This extraordinary act of empathy and commitment exemplifies the core values of nursing and advanced practice. Megan and Chinal demonstrated not only clinical excellence but also profound compassion, ensuring the patient’s emotional and physical needs were met during an unimaginable time. Their dedication truly reflects the spirit of the DAISY Award.
