I have been a Registered Nurse at MMC for 24 years. Ten of those years were spent in the float pool, so I have worked alongside nurses in just about every specialty there is. I suffer from kidney stones that require frequent surveillance as well as multiple surgical and urological procedures. I am followed by the staff at MMP Urology Associates. During these almost four years, I have encountered with and been cared for by a wonderful nurse, Megan Curtis RN.
Megan has always gone above and beyond to see that I am given the care that I need. A perfect example of this occurred yesterday. After having suffered three days of debilitating pain and nausea, I sought care at the emergency room. As suspected, imaging done at the ER revealed that I, in fact, have another large obstructing kidney stone that I will not be able to pass on my own. I immediately contacted Megan at the office. She was able to fit me into their already busy scheduled day to have me seen by a provider immediately. Once I arrived there, Megan was there waiting for me. I was told by the check-in secretary that I was a "VIP patient", probably in jest, but that is certainly how I was treated by Megan and the entire staff I encountered.
It was then determined that I will require a surgical intervention to clear the stone obstructing my ureter. When the provider told me that the next available date for surgery was more than a week away, of course, I was concerned. Not only because it meant enduring another week of unrelenting pain, but it also meant that I would be unable to return to my job as an RN that much longer as I can't work while taking narcotics for pain. It just so happened that this was my vacation week. That's where Megan came in. She immediately went to the scheduling secretary and to the surgeons to find me an earlier date. After a lot of rearranging, she got me a date only two days later, still during my vacation, which meant I could return to work after my vacation ended and ease my suffering much quicker. She made sure that I got prescriptions for pain and nausea in the interim and assured me that if anything changed, to call her and she would see that I got in emergently. Megan didn't have to do all this for me as she is the nurse manager. This is not the first time Megan has done this for me. Put simply, if I ever need anything, all I have to do is call and she is there. I can never express my gratitude to her for treating me with such compassion. This is only one example of the above and beyond care, I have received from Megan. I hope that I am as good to the patients in my specialty as she has been to me.
