She was patient and kind and did everything to make him more comfortable.
Megan Mattison took care of a ten-year-old boy after his appendectomy. He did not feel well and was vomiting and in pain. She was patient and kind and did everything to make him more comfortable. She was also great with us, concerned family members. She never made us feel rushed or like we were a burden with our requests. He was there most of the day before he was discharged. She made sure he was as comfortable as he could be and that we had everything we needed to successfully make it home and help him continue to recover. Except for one thing, at home our son started having more pain and was tired. He asked for his favorite blanket, the blanket he has had since he was born….to our horror we did not have it! Well, let’s just say panic ensued immediately! His dad drove back to Children’s Mercy desperate to recover his beloved blanket. He got to the unit and spoke to Megan several times and told her he could not go home without it. She told him to grab a coffee and have a seat. She took his cell phone number and said, ‘don’t worry I am on it.’ She went through all the dirty linens! She went through surgical and then post op linens! It was 7:30 pm now, the end of a very long shift! But she did not let that interfere with her search! And she managed to find it! She came out smiling and gave it to dad! She asked about his son and said to tell him hi! Dad then FaceTimed the family proudly carrying the lost beloved blanket over his shoulder and a big smile on his face! She is our hero! Someone who takes an hour at the end of her shift to search for an old, somewhat tattered, well-worn and well-loved blanket for a patient she knew less than eight hours! She did this all with a smile and genuine concern as if this was her most important mission (we know it was ours). We had to give a shout out and a big thank you to Megan. Please let her know what a difference she made for our family during a difficult time. We were blessed to have her!
