Megan demonstrated outstanding clinical skills and assessment in identifying that this patient was in crisis and needed immediate intervention.
The OR contacted Megan regarding a patient who had not arrived for a port placement. The OR was concerned about the patient's medical stability and requested a Lyft to pick her up. Megan, acting as House Supervisor, recognized the risk of a Lyft and advised that an ambulance would be more appropriate if the patient was unstable. With the OR being busy, Megan proactively offered to call the patient to assess the situation and instruct her to call an ambulance.
Megan called the patient and left a message. Shortly after, the patient called back, leaving a tearful message explaining her agoraphobia and fear of coming in due to past negative medical experiences. The patient also expressed deep depression and distress.
Concerned by the patient's distraught tone, Megan immediately called back, but the patient did not answer. Megan left a message informing the patient that if she did not call back within ten minutes, an ambulance would be dispatched to check on her. When the patient did not respond within the given timeframe, Megan promptly called 911 to send an ambulance and police to conduct a welfare check. Upon their arrival, the patient was found to be suicidal with a plan to commit suicide. The patient was then brought to the emergency department and placed on a psychiatric hold.
Megan demonstrated outstanding clinical skills and assessment in identifying that this patient was in crisis and needed immediate intervention. Her initiative in following up with the patient, setting clear time limits, and responding swiftly and appropriately ultimately saved the patient's life. Megan's actions are an exemplary demonstration of our organization's core values.
