While the entirety of the SICU staff was amazing, Meg just stood out as a shining star.
Recently my 22-year-old daughter was transferred emergently from SJRMC Plymouth to Mishawaka to undergo a cardiac cath due to having a heart attack. Something quite rare, and very scary, for a 22-year-old. This all happened overnight and made for a chaotic few hours. Once daylight emerged on 12/21/22, and she was more stable in the SICU, Meg took over her care as her dayshift nurse. Meg was amazing all day. My daughter was still scared, and as her parent, but also a nurse, I know I took over most of the conversations with her care team. Meg went out of her way to include my daughter and explained everything to her in a way she could understand. My daughter was so much more at ease with Meg. Meg did the things as nurses we all want to do for our patients, down to helping my daughter in the bathroom and allowing her an opportunity to clean up with as much modesty as possible given the situation, but still providing the help she needed. Meg made sure with each new test ordered throughout the day she came to the room to explain it to my daughter, and when the results came up, she was back in the room to communicate those to us as well. While the entirety of the SICU staff was amazing, Meg just stood out as a shining star. I applaud her in her care of my daughter, she truly acted with compassion and was comforting to both of us at a time when despite my own knowledge, I was trying to be my daughter's mom and not her nurse. Meg overheard a phone conversation I was having with a family member regarding an issue that occurred at the Plymouth ER, and after my call, very professionally asked if she could get her manager involved so that the issue could be investigated further to prevent it from happening again. This could have been ignored, as it didn't concern Meg or the care at the Mishawaka campus. Meg making that call and getting involved will have quality improvement implications on care in the ER at Plymouth. Again, Meg stood out as a nurse who cares not only for her current patient, but all patients and wants to improve services at St. Joe. For these reasons, Meg Adams is being recognized as an outstanding nurse and I feel she is the spirit of the DAISY Award.
