I want to start by saying that, as a nurse myself, it is always a very different experience to witness care from a loved one's perspective. There is a profound sense of losing control. In that moment, I was incredibly grateful to have Megan Hunt there to take that burden off my shoulders.

After multiple hospital admissions for my father-in-law, we made the difficult decision to transition to hospice care. This was not a choice made lightly. Shortly after enrolling in hospice, he experienced a sudden decline. I knew as an ICU nurse that he needed inpatient hospice care.

When we learned he had been accepted to the hospital, my immediate thought was, "Who will be taking care of this man who has given so much to all of us?" When Megan walked into the room, I instantly felt relief. I had worked with her before in educational settings and knew her to be compassionate and dedicated. In that moment, I knew he was in good hands, and I didn't need to worry anymore.

Megan stepped in without hesitation and cared for my father-in-law with both skill and heart. As his condition required aggressive IV pain management, Megan consistently advocated for him with the providers. She recognized when he developed a tolerance to one pain medication and quickly facilitated a transition to another to ensure his comfort.

As an ICU nurse, it is not easy to step back and trust someone else with the care of a loved one, but Megan made that possible. She supported not only my father-in-law, but our entire family. She took the time to explain everything to my husband and mother-in-law, bringing comfort during an incredibly difficult time.

This experience has profoundly changed my perspective as a nurse. I now have a deeper understanding of what our patients' families endure as we care for their loved ones at the end of life. Megan gave me a sense of peace knowing my father-in-law was cared for with the same compassion and dedication we felt for him. She stepped in during a time when I simply did not have the strength to do it myself.

Megan, I want you to know: never change who you are. Do not let the challenges of nursing wear down your beautiful soul. You are an incredible nurse, and the care you provide does not go unnoticed. Please know that our family is endlessly grateful for you and your heart.

Thank you, Megan, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
