Her empathy, initiative, and dedication ensured that this patient’s wife could be present with her husband when it mattered most.
In the high-acuity environment of the ICU, Nurse Megan Ferguson consistently demonstrates exceptional clinical skill, compassion, and advocacy for both her patients and their families.
During this patient’s hospitalization, the patient was intubated, receiving CRRT, and being managed on a Rotoprone bed. In the midst of providing this highly complex, life-sustaining care, Megan took the time to speak with the patient’s wife and learned that she was facing both financial and housing instability and had been sleeping intermittently in her car. Megan also discovered that the patient’s wife was unable to drive and that traveling to the hospital by bus would take over an hour each way—making it incredibly difficult for her to be at her husband’s bedside during such a critical time.
Despite the intense demands of caring for an extremely ill ICU patient, Megan did not overlook the needs of the patient’s family. Instead, she took action. Megan collaborated with Social Work and utilized Saddleback’s “Simply Better” program to help address this urgent need.
Because of Megan’s initiative and collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, she was able to ensure the patient’s wife had a safe and reliable means of transportation through Uber gift cards. For a family in crisis, this meant that the patient’s wife could be present at the bedside and continue to support and advocate for her loved one during a profoundly difficult time.
Megan’s actions represent the very best of nursing. While delivering expert clinical care to a critically ill patient, she also recognized the profound emotional and practical challenges facing the patient’s family and stepped in to help in a meaningful way. Her empathy, initiative, and dedication ensured that this patient’s wife could be present with her husband when it mattered most.
Nursing is not only about managing complex medical care—it is about seeing the whole person and supporting families during their most vulnerable moments. Megan exemplifies this every day. Her compassion, advocacy, and humanity make an immeasurable difference to the patients and families she serves. She truly represents the heart of nursing and is deeply deserving of this recognition.
