I came into L&D for what we thought would be a simple c-section. From the start, this nurse was a caring and competent nurse, taking it on herself to take photos of my son’s delivery and of us as a family for the first time in the OR. They were very nearly the only photos as a family we had, and I will deeply cherish her simple act forever. Shortly after returning to our room, this nurse noticed my bleeding was not normal. She was quick to jump into action trying to slow the bleeding and follow the postpartum hemorrhage protocol, all while reassuring me. When the decision was made to take me back to the OR, this nurse was there every step of the way, came with me to the ICU, and pumped breast milk for me when I was unable to do it myself because she knew I wanted to breastfeed and wouldn’t be able to if they did not establish my supply within a certain timeframe. She made sure my newborn son was cared for while my husband visited me in the ICU. Because of her quick action when I started bleeding heavily, I was back in the OR when things began to go badly for me, with the resources available to save my life. I truly believe things would have gone differently if she had not been so diligent in her assessments and I will forever be thankful to her for the care and compassion she provided myself, my husband, and our son beyond what was expected of her.
