During my two years as a student nurse, I have never had a nurse include me in patient care or fuel my curiosity to the degree Megan had.
Megan was my nurse preceptor for my BSN capstone. During my two years as a student nurse, I have never had a nurse include me in patient care or fuel my curiosity to the degree Megan had. She would always answer my questions, and when she didn't know the answer, would encourage me to seek out said answers.
She was always patient with me during patient care, implementing the "see-one, do-one" technique with nursing skills. But most importantly of all, if I missed a step, fumbled, or felt unsure of my abilities, she never shamed me or made me feel stupid. That quality in a teacher is so scant in all levels and disciplines of education. Megan is an excellent teacher, evident in her calm demeanor and careful word choice.
She is patient beyond reason and provides constructive feedback when needed. Megan would frequently emphasize the use of nursing judgment. When relevant, she would highlight which patient concern was the most critical and ask how I'd approach this concern. To the very sick and sedated, to the anxious and alert, Megan used her nursing judgment to care for and assure her patients that she was fulfilling her role as their nurse to the best of her ability.
I recall a patient for whom she strongly advocated extubation. Later that day, the patient was eating broth and hugging their child. Megan is a phenomenal nurse and was the best preceptor a student could hope for.
