She made frequent phone calls to the nurses in the ICU to provide updates about her son. She even came in on an off day to volunteer to assist her over to the ICU to visit him in person.
I would like to recognize Megan for the exceptional care she provided to our patient in September. Megan cared for this patient a few times and developed a relationship with her during her treatment with stem cell transplant. During this care, she learned that the patient’s son was also suffering from late-stage cancer and was transferred to the ICU here at NMH. She made frequent phone calls to the nurses in the ICU to provide updates about her son. She even came in on an off day to volunteer to assist her over to the ICU to visit him in person. We later learned that the prognosis was poor for her son and he would be transitioning to hospice. As anyone could imagine, this would be incredibly difficult news to bear, and with the addition of dealing with your own intense, lifesaving treatment. Megan assisted the patient two more times over to the ICU, even staying past the end of her shift so that she could spend more time with her son. While the future is currently unknown, I know the patient appreciated the time Megan took to care for her and allow her to visit with her son.

Megan displays the empathy, compassion, and courage it takes to be an oncology nurse on a daily basis. She also exemplifies NM’s core values of patient first, integrity, teamwork, and excellence, as seen during this extraordinary circumstance. We appreciate the exceptional work that Megan provides and are lucky to have her on the 16 Prentice team!
