Megan McCort, BSN, RN
I am a nurse and have worked with and encountered hundreds of amazing nurses. That being said, this is my first-ever DAISY nomination.
I had just gotten back from my C-section, and I was feeling on top of the world that my baby was already safely thriving in the NICU. I felt like I was through with the roller coaster of my pregnancy. I was safe.
Little did I know that it was just the beginning of an extremely difficult story.
Megan was very thorough in her assessments and realized during the fundal exam that my uterus appeared to be deviated to the right and that I was soaking my pads every 30 minutes. As I sat up, I didn't feel right. I just looked at her and told her something was wrong.
Without hesitation, she reached out to the provider. Once he was at the bedside, it felt like within seconds I was violently vomiting and pouring blood onto the stretcher. I was hemorrhaging uncontrollably.
A few seconds later, I thought that my life was coming to an end. I looked at her, and I looked at my husband as the room started to get fuzzy. I just remember whispering to my husband, "I love you," as I thought they might be my last words.
Megan said, "No," as she ran over and pushed the nurse assist button.
Before I knew it, there were what seemed like a dozen nurses at the bedside, switching my pads out what seemed like every few seconds. I assumed I was receiving some type of hemorrhage protocol, remembering a shot in my leg, a sublingual medication, and another medication that was given rectally. I was then taken to the OR.
Later, the ICU doctor told us I had lost 3 liters of blood.
Megan urgently got me the care I needed. It was lifesaving action.
I've learned in life that you can choose to focus on the one negative in an experience and hold on to that, or you can choose to focus on the many blessings and exceptional moments, and that's what keeps you moving forward.
This is why I am nominating Megan to receive one of the most honorable awards a nurse can receive. Because there is great care, there is exceptional care, and then there is lifesaving care.

Nurses like you deserve recognition. Because of you, I am here to be a mother to my kids, a wife to my husband, and a nurse who is able to provide care for others, just as you did for me.
