Megan recently took care of a developmentally delayed adult on our unit with the understanding of an 8-year-old. I was making rounds and I observed an interaction that moved me to tears. The lab was there to draw his blood and he was scared. She sat on the edge of his bed, held his hand, and explained thoroughly what the lab needed to do, the reason and how they were going to do it. "Yes, it is a needle, but it's a very small one", she spoke to him in simple terms. She told him that she'd be with him the entire time. He agreed to let the lab draw his blood. She spent her lunch with him when SWAT was drawing his blood, just to ease his fears. She spoke to him how I'd want an RN to speak to my family if they were apprehensive about getting labs drawn again. Her calm voice, reassuring statements, and just her overall care and concern made this patient comfortable. When everything was said and done, she said to him, "that wasn't so bad, was it? You did great! I'm proud of you!" The patient had a smile on his face from ear to ear and gave her a hug. I literally walked away from the room with tears in my eyes. She is a new-grad nurse, but you'd never know it. Her skills are advanced beyond her years and her therapeutic communication skills are top notch. We are lucky to have her working with us.
