Megan Powers, BSN, RN
I would like to recognize Megan Powers for her exceptional dedication to ensuring safe, coordinated, veteran-centered, and high-quality nursing care for our patients. Over the past several weeks, she has repeatedly demonstrated outstanding vigilance, communication, and problem-solving in addressing gaps in imaging coordination that directly impact patient outcomes. Her actions have prevented missed diagnoses, reduced unnecessary appointments, and ensured that veterans receive the comprehensive care they deserve. Below are several examples that truly highlight Meg's commitment:
Patient #1: An appointment remained scheduled with no imaging completed. Meg’s diligence in tracking enabled her to catch this, and she took action to ensure the issue was resolved before the veteran arrived. Her awareness and follow-through helped prevent an ineffective clinic visit and reinforced the importance of proper communication across teams.
Patient #2: Another veteran had not completed their imaging. After being alerted by the service MSA, Meg took action. Her attention to detail ensured the care team knew the situation and could take appropriate steps for the patient’s ongoing care.
Patient #3: A veteran arrived at the clinic without the required imaging. A provider no longer with the service placed the original order, and the discontinuation alert went to the PCP—who did not see it until after the appointment. Meg promptly contacted the imaging MSA during clinic, advocated for the veteran, and reiterated the need to communicate all discontinued imaging orders. Her persistence protected the integrity of the clinic visit and reinforced communication expectations across services.
Meg has been a steadfast advocate not only for the veterans but also for her colleagues navigating these barriers. She consistently identifies gaps, communicates concerns respectfully, and collaborates to find solutions that improve the workflow for all involved. Her dedication ensures that veterans do not experience delays in diagnosis, unnecessary travel, or incomplete visits. Meg’s commitment to thoroughness, teamwork, veteran-centered care, and a culture of high reliability and trust exemplifies the spirit of a VA Nurse. She goes above and beyond every day, and our veterans and teams benefit from her commitment to excellence in nursing practice. Meg deserves the DAISY Award.
