Megan is an extraordinary new nurse. She generally exhibits a knowledge and ability to anticipate care that belies her six months of experience. She is motivated, and intelligent and consistently demonstrates an excellent work ethic. Today, she was caring for a hyperglycemic patient who could not stay awake for more than 30 seconds. Megan, in an effort to protect the dignity of the female patient, assisted her to the bathroom. As the patient gets back in bed, she vomits everywhere. Keep in mind this is after keeping the patient from falling asleep and falling off the bedside commode. So Megan grabs a basin, sits the patient up, and contains the rest of the vomit. It had splattered on Megan’s forehead and Megan was as cool as a cucumber. No reaction at all. Just a nonchalant forearm swipe across her face all the while standing there like the health care Hero she is. I’ve been working in Emergency medicine for over a decade and after seeing Megan in action, I feel confident saying that she will develop into a truly top-tier ER nurse.
