Megan made sure that the patient felt seen and heard. Megan validated her in her new reality and fear. Megan grieved with her and for her.
Megan's patient is a Stage IV lung cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy alone. She is hiding this from coworkers and friends out of fear of burdening them. Her body is failing her, and this is becoming harder for her to hide. Megan recognized her struggles with the sudden advancement of the cancer, her body image, and a lack of a support system. Megan made sure that the patient felt seen and heard. Megan validated her in her new reality and fear. Megan grieved with her and for her. Megan went above and beyond for this patient in so many ways throughout her admission on 3W that she genuinely loved Megan (and Megan's Root Beer Floats!) What seemed to stand out the most to the patient was her presence and acknowledgement of the good, the bad, and the ugly. Megan brought in a good, clean pair of hair clippers from home and held her hand and cried with her while her only friend shaved her head. She acknowledged the patient's insecurities about her body image and was physically and emotionally present for her in every moment. Megan, I could go on and on about all that you mean to this special woman, but no words can describe the connection she felt with you.
