Megan Summers, RN, BSN
Megan Summers is an outstanding nurse patient advocate and an extremely empathetic caretaker. She provided care for a young mother and transitioned her to comfort care. She supported each of the patient’s many family members individually, which I believe led to the most peaceful transition possible for the patient and family.
Megan aided the family in coordinating a schedule and care for the patient’s son with developmental disabilities, created time for the husband to be alone with his wife for a goodbye (and similarly with the patient’s parents and best friends), and coordinated consults with palliative care, spiritual care, and social work. These contributions and these details are not out of the norm for Megan, but what was extraordinary was Megan’s interactions with the patient’s developmentally divergent daughter.
The daughter approached Megan, asking questions away from her mother and extended family, stating, “I process and think differently, so I am hoping you can help me understand.” Megan asked for coverage from her podmates, brought the daughter to a conference room, and sat with her individually to answer any and all of her questions in a private and low-stimulus environment. It was truly above-and-beyond, patient-specific support, and I am grateful to be her coworker.
