I want to give a huge shout out to Meghan Cantwell. Meghan really went above and beyond in advocating for a patient that was on 3S; not even on her unit. Meghan was the charge nurse in the ICU yesterday and today. I spoke with Meghan yesterday evening about a unique & concerning case of a patient that was admitted on 3S. Meghan was never officially consulted by the floor, but after speaking with me, she took it upon herself to look further into this patient's case today. After assessing the patient on 3S, she had some serious concerns about his treatment. She spoke with the hospitalist and repeatedly asked for/suggested a general surgery consult for what she believed was sepsis and possible necrotizing fasciitis of the lower leg. The hospitalist initially declined to consulate general surgery as he had already consulted orthopedics. Meghan then pushed further and encouraged the hospitalist to at least consult infectious disease. After the patient was evaluated by orthopedics and infectious disease, both specialties recommended a general surgery consult. General surgery was ultimately consulted, evaluated the patient, and immediately took the patient to the OR for an I&D with washout. After the OR, the patient remained intubated and was admitted to the ICU for sepsis work up and critical care. I believe that without Meghan's critical thinking skills, adamancy in advocating for her patient, and pushing for a more thorough work up, this patient would not have received the proper care that he needed. I believe that Meghan was instrumental in this patient's plan of care and treatment. Her actions today are just another perfect example of how awesome of a nurse Meghan is and what an asset she is to our League City team.
