This is my second interaction with Mel being my pre-op nurse. The first time was for prostate surgery, this time for a hip replacement. Mel’s care, professionalism, warm smile, and “what can I do for you” attitude toward patient care are remarkable. When she is caring for you, you feel like you’re her only patient, which isn’t the case, of course, but the way she listens to your needs, concerns, and questions puts you instantly at ease. The way she meticulously prepares you for surgery and calms all your fears and anxiety is noteworthy. I’ve never had a nurse like her in the pre-op environment, or any environment for that matter. She is one of the best, if not the best, RNs to ever provide me care.

I went into my hip replacement surgery confident of the outcome and calm, and it was due to Mel’s care leading up to surgery. Mel is the reason I rave about the Iowa City VA Medical Center. The care she and all the staff provide to Veterans and their families is why the ICVA Medical Center is at the top of country for VA facilities. Please thank Mel from me and my family and congratulate her with recognition she so overwhelmingly deserves.
