Mel has the patient’s best interest in mind - how can we improve their situation? – how can we help more?
“DAISY Award recipients personify our remarkable patient experience and our Standards of Excellence – Sense of Ownership, Compassion, Communication, Commitment to Co-workers, Positive Attitude, and Responsiveness.” This statement describes Melanie Trca perfectly. I have witnessed her demonstrating each of these standards of excellence, more than once. It’s not necessarily a “situational” thing with Mel, it’s a “daily” thing. It’s her “normal”. Mel has been in healthcare/hospital care for a long time. She is the type of co-worker we all appreciate in others. “Treating others as you would like to be treated.” I have watched Mel trade shifts with co-workers, to help them out of a bind. I watched Mel pick up needs because she knows how hard it is to run short. I have watched Mel partner with her co-workers to deliver the best care for each patient, on each shift. She cares about her co-workers, just as she cares about her patients, her pets, her family, etc.
Often, Mel has approached me with, “What do you think we should do for patient ‘so-and-so’? I feel so bad for them, and wish we do more to help them.” Mel has the patient’s best interest in mind - how can we improve their situation? – how can we help more? Mel does not delegate things to others, she just does them. Mel is the type of nurse I would want to take care of my loved one. We’re lucky to have Mel at JRMC.

Another co-worker nominated Mel and shared many of the same sentiments. In addition, she shared an experience. One day when Mel arrived at work, she heard someone cry out for help. The patient was choking. Mel jumped into action and gave the patient the Heimlich maneuver. The food was dislodged, and the patient was fine. She carried on with her shift just like this was any ordinary day. She is truly a hero, and I am proud to have the privilege of working with her.

A former patient also nominated Mel Trca for the DAISY Award. He stated, “I was hospitalized for 2 weeks at Jones Regional Medical Center. Mel was often the nurse in charge. She was always cheerful and helped in any way she could. Her presence always put me at ease.”
