Melanie was calmed and remain focused and reassured the panicked mother that she would do her best to take care of her and the baby.
Any opportunity to recognize a nurse that goes above and beyond for her patients is well worth the time to write and submit this DAISY nomination letter. I would like to recognize Melanie Bradshaw, a nurse in the emergency department at the kingwood Convenient Care Center.
While there are many stories of how Melanie has taken extra steps or even gone the extra mile for her patients and her peers, there are the two specific stories I would like to share that she has not been recognized for.
Prior to transitioning her nursing career to the emergency department, Melanie was working in labor and delivery. She still exudes a passion for caring for that special population of patients and uses every opportunity to help educate her peers.
One night, during her shift, Melanie had a patient present to the ER in active, imminent labor and was only 28 weeks gestation. This patient lives in the United Kingdom and was only visiting family in Kingwood for a few weeks. I was told by one of my co-worker nurses who was also working that night with Melanie that she was on her element.
Melanie was calmed and remain focused and reassured the panicked mother that she would do her best to take care of her and the baby. The mother was transferred to TMC through Life Flight and delivered the baby shortly upon arriving. Her little boy was extremely premature but is alive and thriving now. Melanie left such a lasting impression on this mother-to-be-in such a short, stressful time. The patient returned to the CCC in Kingwood to find Melanie and thank her in person for all the care that she did. Since then, she and Melanie have built a good relationship and stay in contact with each other and often shares pictures and stories of her miracle baby with Melanie.
Another extraordinary care that I was told by another co-worker that Melanie showed kindness and compassion to one of her patients last year. Melanie was caring for an elderly patient in the emergency department that was unable to walk. This patient expressed to Melanie how sad she was not being able to be outside to watch and enjoy the fireworks for the holiday.
Melanie, without skipping a beat, loaded up with this patient in a wheelchair, rolled them out in the ambulance bay doors to see the fireworks while staying and monitoring the patient's condition. Her nursing peer that night states that the gratitude from this patient was overflowing because Melanie never hesitates to advocate for her patients, no matter how simple the gesture may seem.
These are the two amazing stories that Melanie exhibited that I heard from my colleagues, but I am confident that there are many more extraordinary cares that go unnoticed.
