A patient was elevated in our department and was to be discharged home, however, she was not from the area and needed to get back home to Charlotte. Amazingly, Melanie helped coordinate getting her back home. Melanie called her boyfriend at work to get the patient’s sister’s phone number. She then comforted the patient after her boyfriend broke up with her over the phone. Melanie called her sister to help pay for a train ticket back to Charlotte as well as finding a pharmacy within walking distance of the train station to send her prescription. Next, she coordinated a ride to help get the patient to the pharmacy from the train station. Melanie found donated clothes and a scrub top to replace the soiled clothes the patient was wearing so she could travel in comfort. None of these things are the responsibility of the nurse, but Melanie went above and beyond to meet the needs of this patient. She did all these things with kindness and generosity. I am so proud to work alongside this nurse.
