Recently there was an elderly patient who had been frantically trying to find her phone that was seemingly lost. She said this was her only connection to friends and family. The ED Director found that the final possible place of the phone was MICU. After an extensive search it was concluded the phone had been lost. Melanie Elsky, Nurse Manager of MICU, talked with the patient and found out the importance and meaning of the phone to her and her family. The patient had been unable to speak to her family since the phone was lost. The patient was possibly going to be discharged this same day.
Without hesitation, Melanie went and bought the patient another phone and called her unit on her way back to the hospital to ensure the patient was not discharged without the replacement. The patient was overjoyed and so amazed by the act of kindness. This shows the heart and compassion of Nurse Melanie Elsky - going beyond the science.
