Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man, all heroes, are fighting the battle of good against evil. What happens when a hero doesn’t wear a cape, doesn’t have superhuman powers? Do we see them?
This individual is an ordinary hero fighting against time. Working tirelessly behind the scenes within our community to keep those that we care about safe. In her role as Director of Performance Improvement and Infection Preventionist at Audubon County Memorial Hospital and Clinics, Melanie Larsen works diligently to ensure the safety of others.
Melanie began working at ACMH the same week news of a highly transmissible virus reached the United States. Several months before the first case of COVID-19 was detected in Audubon County, Melanie began developing COVID-19 Infection Prevention policies and procedures under the guidance of the Iowa Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These new procedures played an integral role in the health and well-being of Audubon County Memorial Hospital and Clinics’ staff, patients, and visitors.
Melanie has spent countless hours personally contacting residents of Audubon County to schedule appointments for their vaccine. Often, Melanie would come in early and stay late to reach patients when it was convenient for them. These calls weren’t simply scheduling an appointment. Fear surrounding COVID-19 and new vaccines required open and honest dialogue. These discussions were critical in clarifying information that could easily be misinterpreted. Melanie’s actions show her belief that no time is wasted if it saves the life of even one person.
Melanie organized the vaccine clinics held at ACMH, coordinating everything from patient processing and hospital staffing to managing supplies and vaccine delivery. She continues to work with the staff of the Audubon County Public Health Department. This partnership brings tremendous strength to Audubon County.
Melanie is a leader. She builds teams with her energy and enthusiasm. She builds trust through her compassion and the time she spends with each patient. She builds confidence with her honesty.
Melanie is quick to give credit to others, but it is her dedication and concern for the safety of all Audubon County residents that have saved many lives.
We are grateful for Melanie and proud to nominate her as the 2022 DAISY Award Winner. While Melanie may be an ordinary hero in the real world, to us, she is extraordinary.
