I found out late last fall that my cancer returned after surgery several years before and now my best form of attack was chemotherapy. I had never been faced with this personally but saw my baby sister go through it more than once for breast cancer, and then brain cancer, and subsequently losing her at age 53, two days before Christmas, 2017. I had a lot of apprehension and anxiety going into this the first time. That was when I met Melanie. She was there for my first treatment and she was my Guardian Angel. She came in with the most compassionate smile and eyes I'd ever seen in the many nurses I have encountered on this journey. Her professional, but soft approach was so comforting as she explained everything that was about to happen with my infusion. She was very reassuring and understanding, that I felt very comfortable in everything that was about to happen and that it would be okay. I felt she really cared about me, and my having a positive outcome. Melanie has been my nurse another time, displaying the same caring and compassionate professionalism, and has checked in on me when I have been back. Only if you have been through chemotherapy cancer treatments can you understand the apprehensions and fears one experiences entering this fight for your life. I can only hope everyone has an experience like mine with a nurse like Melanie for that first time and always. She truly personifies Sanford's commitment to providing an inspiring experience and makes an outstanding role model.
