In those moments of pain and panic, not knowing where I was and not recognizing the faces around me, Mel's voice was calm, caring, and familiar.
Melanie was my nurse through two surgeries. We were both disappointed when she was my nurse on surgery days—all those hours in pre-op and the OR and recovery were valuable time we could have been spending together! When I woke up in recovery after surgery, I was hyperventilating and in pain. The next thing I knew, I was being handed the phone and told there was someone who wanted to talk to me. It was Melanie. She reassured me and helped me to breathe from six floors up and over the phone. In those moments of pain and panic, not knowing where I was and not recognizing the faces around me, Mel's voice was calm, caring, and familiar. She found a way to reach me through all the confusion. She wasn't even my nurse on the day of my high school graduation, but she was right there cheering and filming me in the mini-graduation ceremony that she and some other nurses surprised me with in the hall. Melanie is kind, funny, witty, sarcastic, and sweet. There are not many things I will truly miss when I am discharged from inpatient, but Mel is one of them.
